Gold Cup is Doncaster Brewery & Taps House ale and is available elsewhere only between the end of August and the beginning of October during the Leger Festival. A traditional golden bitter made with Maris Otter and Light Crystal Malt, hopped using only East Kent Goldings.
Floral earthy in aroma with a slightly sweet spicy flavour.
The Gold Cup is the oldest surviving race at Doncaster Racecourse. Established in 1766 the Doncaster Gold Cup pre-dates the St Leger Stakes by ten years. It was initially held at Cantley Common and was moved to its present location in 1776. The Doncaster Cup is a flat horse race which is open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. The race is run over a distance of 2 miles and 2 furlongs (3,621 metres), and takes place each year in September.
During the early part of its history the race was contested over 4 miles. It was shortened to 2 miles and 5 furlongs in 1825, and reduced to 2 miles and 2 furlongs in 1891. It was cut by another furlong in 1908, and restored to its previous length in 1927.
The present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, and for a period the Doncaster Cup was classed at Group 3 level. It was promoted to Group 2 in 2003.
The Doncaster Cup is one of Britain’s leading events for “stayers”. These are horses which specialise in racing over long distances. The Doncaster Cup is the final leg of the Stayers’ Triple Crown, preceded by the Gold Cup and the Goodwood Cup. The race is currently held on the third day of Doncaster’s four-day St. Leger Festival.
